Our Wall Display

We have put a lot of work into our inquiry over the last few weeks of the term. We worked in groups to answer our key question, how does our garden grow?
We then presented our hard work to the rest of the Middle School.

What is an Edible Garden?

We have brainstormed what we think an Edible Garden is.....

Our Scarecrow

During our visits to the garden we had noticed that some of our plants have been eaten by birds. We realised that we would somehow have to protect our garden from them. The children suggested that we build a scarecrow to watch over our special garden.
Firstly we designed our scarecrow and brainstormed what materials we would need to build it. With the help of everyone it didn't take long to build our scarecrow. Isn't he handsome! Now all he needs is a name....

Alex and Harrisons photos of our garden

Alex Egan and Harrison have taken some photos of our garden to show you how much our vegetable plants have grown!

Observations

On Tuesday the rain finally stopped and we got a chance to visit our garden. Kip had brought 'Worm Wee' from home so while we looked at our garden, Mrs Ryder poured the fertiliser over our garden to help it grow.

Here are some of our observations-

Briana- "Room 12's lettuce has grown a lot".
Helena- "Our vegetables have got bigger".
Lav-"Room 10's scarecrow is wearing a cool hat".
Arabella- "Our plants are growing really well".
Craig- "Some of the potato seedlings have sprouts growing above the ground".
Kush- "Some of the plants have been squashed or eaten".
Eloise- "I think that the scare crows are doing a good job of protecting the gardens".
Nathania- "The scarecrows look great".

Room 9's Pretanimals

Last week we had a great time making play dough pretanimals. We had to use our imagination to create a made up animal. We then used moulding techniques to bring our pretanimals to life!

Creative Story Writing

In writing we are learning how to write an imaginative story. We have used our imagination by pretending to be a scarecrow.
We have thought carefully about describing what we can see, feel, hear, taste and smell. We have also included adjectives (describing words) to make our stories interesting to read.

Here I am again. I can see water dripping off the roof and see the teachers cars. I can feel the mucky mud. The rain falls from the sky but goes in the yucky, muddy dirt and then I get cold feet because I don't have shoes on. I also feel a freezing breeze going past me. A freezing cold wind. Brrrr!
By Craig

Hi again! I can see a yellow tractor in the shed behind me. I can also see a car leaving. I can smell the mud. The rain is coming. I am very wet and cold. I can feel the strong wind and the cold air. I can hear the sea. There must be big waves today! The rain has stopped. I will get dry in the sun. Oh no... it is my lunch time and I am late.
Hey seagull, stop that noise. I'll get you for this! It is raining again and I am very wet. The clouds are grey.

Our Edible Garden Trip

On Thursday we had a class trip to an Edible Garden. On the way to the garden we collected seaweed from the beach for the gardens compost. Once we were there we learnt how to make compost with seaweed. It was very smelly!

We recognised some vegetable plants from our edible garden at school, like carrots, broccoli, silver beet, and spinach. The garden was huge. We hope our garden grows this big!

Today we visited our garden. We made some very interesting observations!

Arabella- "The plants are growing up, and not down."
Amy- "The bugs have eaten some of the leaves and left more holes".
Nathania- "The potatoes are growing well. I saw a stalk popping up from the ground".
Harlem- "There were green things spread over our garden to stop the snails and slugs from eating our garden".

Helena and Rebecca took some photos.

Amy- Caterpillars
Harrison- People

Kip- Other pests like slugs

Helena noticed that slugs like to eat their greens, including our broccoli plants!

Read our diary entries about our Edible Garden
Today we went to visit our garden. We all looked closely at our garden and made observations:

Helena - "It got bigger and you can see some of the little bits of the potatoes."

Lav - "They were really big and the potatoes are still under the ground."

Alex - "All the plants have grown because it has rained. Some of the plants have fallen down because the rain might have been a bit heavy."

Rebecca - "Some of them have been eaten by caterpillars."

Harrison - "The plants have grown really well."

Wayne - "The plants grew well in the good soil."

Craig  - "Some of them the stems have broken"

Kip - "My potato seed has gotten really big because I saw some sprouts in the ground."

Xavier - "I saw some carrots and potatoes.

Chloe - "That all of them have been growing really fast and some have been eaten by ants or big birds."

Maddie - "Some of the potatoes you can see a plant coming out."

Brianna - "Some of the potatoes have grown sprouts already."

Matt P - "All the plants have grown really fast because it was raining."

Kush - The plants are growing lots of leaves."

Nathania - "Some of the seedlings are growing very fast and some have been eaten."

Harry - "My plant was growing really well ... actually the class plants."

Matt H - "There was lots of shade and not enough sun and the other veggie gardens have more sun and it might be stopping our plants from growing."

Arabella - "We did very well planting them and they look very good."

Estelle - "Some of the carrots are sprouting because there is some grass stuff near them."

Check out our crazy cartoons. We have used our imaginations to create our cartoons and we also had a lot of fun!

Look how creative we are! We brought a vegetable to school so we could sketch it, then we used dye to make these colourful pictures of vegetables....

room 9's edible garden

On Tuesday we planted potatoes, carrots, onions, spinach and soon we will plant beans. We had to plant the potatoes 30 cm apart. Craig took lots and lots of photos of the edible garden and Craig  took some photos of a big worm. Maybe we can eat the plants when they are right and I hope it rains. By Connor.

We were so proud of our selves once we had finished the planting. Now we can't wait for the vegetables to grow so we can eat them!

OUR LEARNING JOURNEY

This term we are learning all about communities. Room 9 will be working as a community as we work together to look after our edible garden. We will also find out how our garden is community aswell.
We have chosen the site for our garden and the caretakers have kindly built the garden for us.

We have thought about what we want to find out about our edible garden this term. Read our questions:

Helena and Amy- "Why do plants need water?"
Maddie and Rebecca- "How do seeds grow?"
Kush and Lav- "How do seeds grow into plants?"
Craig and Kip- "How are seeds made?"
Matt H- "Where do seeds come from?"
Alex and Wayne- "How much water do plants need to grow?"
Eloise and Briana- "How do plants grow?"
Harry and Alex E- "How many times a day do you need to water a plant?"
Arabella and Estelle- "Why do plants need water ad sunshine?"

Mrs Dean was very kind and brought plenty of different seedlings. There was spinach, onions, carrots, broccoli, beans and potatoes.

Look at us all getting our hands dirty, planting the seedlings. Craig has taken photos of us busy planting the seedlings.
